Living Historically
THE VISION BUILD
The 303 Litho property was once home to three Quonset huts. Developed by the United States Navy during World War I, these semi-circular structures were produced by the thousands. Made of lightweight and galvanized steel, Quonset huts were easy to ship and assemble, making them ideal for military use. These historic structures were used for medical offices, barracks, isolation wards, and housing for soldiers.
The Quonset huts became an iconic part of the Franklin Square skyline and were, for many years, occupied by Syracuse Lithographing Co. The local organization printed books, catalogs, posters, and more.
Invented in 1796, Lithographing was a cost-effective way to print and publish theatrical works. To develop just one print, the artist first drew on stone using a grease or oil-based substance. The stone was then traced with chemicals and water, a process which established where the ink would settle, and which areas would remain free of color. Creating a lithograph was quite involved, and many considered it an art form.
Syracuse Lithographing Co. closed in 2012 and the site remained unoccupied. Its history is what inspired the design and name of 303 Litho.
